President’s Biography


Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (commonly known as “Lula”) was first elected President of Brazil in 2002 and, in October 2006, he was re-elected for a second four-year mandate.

A labourer in the metallurgical industry and an active unionist, he became President of the Metallurgists Trade Union in 1975. President Lula founded the Worker’s Party (PT- Partido dos Trabalhadores) in 1980, and later co-founded and became president of the Central Workers Union (CUT – Central Unica dos Trabalhadores).

Last year, President Lula received the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize from UNESCO. He also received the 2009 Chatham House Prize and the 2010 Davos Global Statesmanship Award.
